The Craniofacial and Cleft Palate Laboratory provides early assessment and intervention to children with craniofacial conditions who are at risk for speech and language delays. For very young children, traditional articulation interventions are often unsuitable. Our hybrid approach to intervention combines Enhanced Milieu Teaching (EMT) methods with phonological emphasis (PE), fostering both language and speech development in a natural environment. To achieve this, we place particular emphasis on training parents, caregivers, and other professionals implementing EMT/PE into daily communication with these children.
Currently, we are working with Dr Inge Trindade at the University of Sao Paulo-Bauru, Brazil and Centrino Hospital for Craniofacial Abnormalities to adapt our intervention approach for use abroad.
For further information on the use of EMT/PE in early intervention for children with cleft palates, please refer to documents provided on this page.
